Vegetarian, Pescatarian and Gluten-Free at Bistro Cafe Miami
On this page

Bistro Cafe's menu leans heavily on meat. Ham, bacon, carnitas, chorizo and skirt steak show up in most savory dishes, often without being named in the title. Vegetarians can still eat well there, and pescatarians have plenty of choice. Gluten-free diners have a harder time.

This guide goes through the menu by diet, using the ingredients listed on the cafe's menu. It is a starting point for your conversation with the server, not a guarantee: nothing on the menu is certified gluten-free or allergen-free, and the kitchen shares grills and fryers.

Vegetarian Options

These dishes list no meat or fish in their ingredients. Prices are dine-in prices.

Fruit SaladFruit with Greek yogurt, granola and honey$18
Oatmeal with CinnamonPlain oatmeal with cinnamon$7

Most of the sweet menu is vegetarian too: the plain, Crazy and Crème Brûlée French toasts, the Oreo, Gitano, Crazy, Pistachio and Churro pancakes, and the Nutella and dulce de leche waffles. Watch for the exceptions. Romeo y Julieta and the Messier waffle sandwich both contain bacon, and the Marsellas scramble that comes with pancakes has bacon too.

Things to ask about: whether the ranchero sauce or the trifongo is made with any meat stock or pork fat, and whether eggs are cooked on the same griddle as bacon if that matters to you.

Pescatarian Options

Seafood shows up across the menu, so a pescatarian has more choice than a vegetarian.

  • Smoked salmon: Smoked Salmon Croissant ($19), Atlántico Revuelto ($23), Espartano ($26), Smoked Salmon Avocado ($28), Avocado Toast with Smoked Salmon ($29), Atlántico Sandwich ($25), Smoked Salmon Salad ($27)
  • Shrimp: Shrimp Avocado ($29), Marino omelette ($29), Shrimp Tacos ($31), Shrimp Avocado Toast ($31)
  • Tuna and octopus: Tuna Sandwich ($21), Tuna Poke Salad ($27), Octopus Avocado Tostones ($34)

Avoid the Mónaco, Pepe Salad and Papas Mar y Tierra if you're pescatarian: each mixes shrimp with steak or chicken.

Vegan Options

Honestly, there isn't much. Nearly every plate has eggs, cheese, butter or a mayo-based sauce, and the fruit salad comes with Greek yogurt and honey. Fresh juices ($9) and the mango and dragon fruit juice are safe. For anything else, ask whether the kitchen can build a plate from vegetables, avocado and plantain without dairy or egg. It's worth asking what's possible on the day.

Gluten-Free Ordering

Wheat is everywhere on this menu: croissants, waffles, pancakes, French toast, brioche, pita, English muffins and tortillas for the burritos, quesadillas and tacos. Some less obvious sources:

  • Soy sauce in the lomo saltado usually contains wheat.
  • Granola on the fruit salad and some pancakes often contains wheat or is processed with it.
  • Wonton chips on the Tuna Poke Salad are made from wheat wrappers.
  • Fried items such as potatoes and tostones may share a fryer with breaded chicken.

Dishes that list no bread in their main ingredients, and are worth asking about, include the omelettes, most scrambled egg plates (ask for no pita), the five standard stuffed avocados and the salads without croutons or wonton chips. Ask whether the potatoes are fried in a shared fryer, and whether sauces like guava sauce and pesto-mayo contain any thickener.

If you have celiac disease, the shared kitchen is the real issue. Bistro Cafe's menu does not claim any dish is gluten-free, and this guide can't either.

Other Allergens and Diets

  • Nuts: pistachio pancakes have pistachios and pistachio cream. Pesto, and so the pesto-mayo used across the menu, is traditionally made with pine nuts. Nutella contains hazelnuts.
  • Pork: "bolo" ham, salami, prosciutto, chorizo, carnitas and bacon appear in many dishes, including some with names that don't hint at pork, such as the Quijote, Afrodita and Bistroletta.
  • Dairy: most savory plates have at least one cheese, and feta is used generously. Ask for it to be left off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Bistro Cafe have vegetarian options?

Yes. Huerto Revuelto, El Jibarito, Huevos Vegetarianos, the Vegetarian Sandwich, the Egg Whites Croissant and most of the sweet menu list no meat.

Only in a limited way. There are dishes without bread, but no dish is certified gluten-free and the kitchen is shared. People with celiac disease should speak to staff before ordering.

Is there anything vegan at Bistro Cafe?

Very little on the printed menu beyond fresh juice. Ask the staff what they can adapt.
